Using Settings
Adjust Field Chronicle language, appearance, Home widgets, privacy, live map recommendations, and Field Journal location types so the journal fits how you work.
Field Chronicle isn’t trying to be “another photo gallery”—it’s trying to be the operating system for your time in the field.
Settings is where you tune Field Chronicle around the journal, not the other way around. Change a default when it gets in the way; ignore the rest.

Shows Gear in the app
Settings tune the journal around you — language, and whether Gear appears in the app.
Profile, language, and appearance
Profile holds display name, email, and avatar. After the first login you can skip or finish a short optional setup (language, Gear, appearance, privacy, live map recommendations). Rerun that guide from Profile anytime. General sets language (English, French, Hebrew). Appearance is Light, Dark, or System. Guests on the public site always see light; your signed-in theme applies inside the journal.
Home widgets and calendar
Home visibility toggles which dashboard widgets appear. Calendar settings control what shows on the grid. Turn off widgets you never open. A smaller Home is easier to scan after a trip.
Field Journal map and location types
Live map recommendations (on by default) gently show nearby species on the mobile outing map while you are about 5 km from the outing—from your sightings, friends, and public posts. They stay quiet when you plan from home. Define the place types you actually use—hide, trail, wetland, backyard—and their colors. Deleting a type resets locations that used it. This is how the map stays in your vocabulary instead of a generic pin list.
Privacy and friends
Privacy and Friends only matter if you use Social. Field Chronicle is a private journal first. Until you choose to share, leave the journal private—especially exact coordinates and sensitive locations. Storage shows how much media you have used.
Why settings are part of the journal
A field notebook that fights your language, contrast, or map labels will not get opened. Settings exist so the chrome disappears. They are not a feature to “complete.” Start from getting started and return here when something nags.
